fall colors

We drove up Boreas Pass with Seth & Holly yesterday to look at the awesome fall colors. I think we were about a week too late for the peak of aspen season but they were pretty great anyways. I love the smell (eau de rotting leaves)…

Also, I edited these photos while listening to “Songs in the Key of Life” on the record player which is probably why they look so warm & happy.

Awkwardly Beautifully Young (gpoy)

Earlier today my friend K posted a couple of scanned photos of me from high school on Facebook. I feel like I’m just now able to come to terms with the awkward young person I was… And so I scanned a few of my own.

I used to cringe about my super androgynous phase. Truthfully, I think it’s just because it also happens to coincide with a time in my life where I wasn’t always very happy. Many of these photos represent good times, tho, especially the ones in Iceland and in Melbourne. I think I was actually a pretty cute little boigirl most of the time and I made it thru teenage and young adulthood without being sucked into the femmebeautyconsumermachine, which is kind of neat.

Self Portrait, 2000.

Elven blurry children, 1997.

Red Rocks, 1999 or 2000ish.

Iceland horse trekking, 1999.

Melbourne, 1996.

Band photo shoot, 2001. We are trying to look very serious here but if I scanned the outtakes (which you could not pay me a million dollars to do!) you could see how much we were goofing around.

bitchface

Um so even though I just turned 32 and am probably technically too old, I totally love to read Tavi at style rookie and her new project, Rookie, a sort of Sassy-esque* online mag for teenagers. The October issue had a DIY section on how to bitchface, and I decided to try it out for myself. Here are my results.

The Unamused

Note that I am not sure my glasses are compatible with bitchface. Also I couldn’t stop laughing on this pose. I apparently have trouble keeping a straight/bored face.

Little Miss Muriel Kitty gave it a try, too.

The Repulsed

I sort of just look angry. Also, I have trouble with independent control over my eyebrows. This one was definitely the most challenging. I’m also not sure I have mastered the smize.

The “Is Anyone Else Hearing This”

I pretty much rocked this one.

The “Really??”

Some Bitchface With Hands Poses

I do think the hands add some believability for those of us who don’t have a lot of facial control.

This next oh-so-attractive photo was inspired by my first creative director Kent, who used to make this face in meetings.

Welp, that’s about it! I rate myself a 6.4 at bitchface. I’d better keep practicing.

*It should be noted that I was never a Sassy reader. I’m not sure why — maybe I was a wee bit young? I did read Seventeen which was mostly deplorable but occasionally had articles about Drew Barrymore, who I was obsessed with.

auspicious

Today because it was my birthday I had a cup of Turkish coffee and when I was done I read my fortune in the bottom of the cup. Here is what I saw:

An owl, two kitties, a pony, a hawk, a genie, and an alligator on the beach. Quite auspicious indeed.

moments

There is something about summer light that makes you more aware of the little moments, like July daisies, or clothes hanging on the line.

life like weeds

Life Like Weeds
Modest Mouse

in this life like weeds

And in the places you go, you’ll see the place where you’re from.
And in the faces you meet, you’ll see the place where you’ll die.
And on the day that you die, you’ll see the people you met.
And in the faces you see, you’ll see just who you’ve been.

in this life like weeds

In this life like weeds, in this life like weeds.
Eyes need us to see, hearts need us to bleed.
In this life like weeds, you’re a rock to me.
I know where you’re from, but where do you belong?
In this life like weeds, you’re the dirt I’ll breath.
In this life like weeds, you’re a rock to me.

in this life like weeds

All this talking all the time and the air fills up, up, up.
Until there’s nothing left to breathe,
And you think you feel most everything.
And we know that our hearts are just made out of strings
To be pulled, strings to be pulled.

in this life like weeds

So you think you’ve figured out everything,
But we know that our minds are just made out of strings
To be pulled, strings to be pulled.

in this life like weeds

All this talking all the time and the air fills up, up, up.
Until there’s nothing left to breathe,
Up until there’s nothin left to speak.
Up until the data parts in space.

Best of 2009 #11: Place

This year, my best place was Denver. Between exploring different parts of town for bookclub meetings and spending a lot of time downtown with Meg & Dustin, I feel like I rediscovered my city.

On a recent photo expedition in the Baker District near Fancy Tiger, I captured some of the textures of Denver (click photo for more).
