The Modern Failure

You are my heroine! And by heroine I mean lady hero. I don’t want to inject you and listen to jazz.”

—Liz Lemon, 30 Rock

Right now my lady hero is my friend Chanelle, who is writing an awesome blog called The Modern Failure. In it she explores “the areas in which the modern woman may feel like a failure (the workplace, the workout, the home, pregnancy, being ‘green’, etc), the origins of the modern woman’s expectations of herself, and why we wake up every day feeling like we are already behind.”

I pretty much think that if you have ever been, cared about, or even met a modern woman human being on this planet, you should probably read it. Right now.

Today because it was my birthday I had a cup of Turkish coffee and when I was done I read my fortune in the bottom of the cup. Here is what I saw:

auspicious coffee

An owl, two kitties, a pony, a hawk, a genie, and an alligator on the beach. Quite auspicious indeed.

Best of 2009 #31: Resolution[less]

I’m not much for resolutions, which always seem to have have a funny way of turning into letdowns when circumstances (or more often interests) change your ability (or desire) to meet them.

In 2009 I turned 30, and I formally set goals for the first time in many years. Right now they are taped up in a notebook for me to read someday in the future. I will probably have met some of them, be working on others, and some of them won’t resonate the same way they did when I wrote them down so I’ll leave those behind. I have started verbalizing some of my dreams and have left others unspoken. The important thing is to simply have them.

Now, bring on 2010!!

Best of 2009 #20: New Person

I have a serious problem with the idea that any of my friends are more “bester” than the others, because it reminds me of 3rd grade when I got temporarily kicked out of the best friends club because I couldn’t make it across the monkey bars. However, the operative word in this Best of 2009 prompt is “new”. This year I grew a new friendship with a really amazing person who inspired me in ways that I am not sure she realizes. This person is taking risks and daring to dream in her own life — starting a business, living creatively, seeking healthfulness, and finding her own path. If you are reading this, I hope you know who you are. Thank you for being you!

Best of 2009 #6: Workshop

Best of 2009 #4: book

Me: OK, we’re going to meditate now. Let’s draw our attention to the breath and focus on the mantra. Om Namah Shivaya. Om Namah Shiv

Mind: “I can help you out with this, you know!

Me: OK, good, because I need your help. Let’s go. Om Namah Shivaya. Om Namah Shiv

Mind: I can help you think of nice meditative images. Like — hey, here’s a good one. Imagine you are a temple. A temple on an island. And the island is in the ocean!

Me: Oh, that is a nice image.

Mind: Thanks, I thought of it myself…
