Best of 2009 #19: Transportation Day

This year marked John’s start of grad school at CU and resulting commute into Boulder 5 times per week. He is really awesome and rides his bike to the bus and then from the bus to campus. I am not so tough/brave/willing to wear bike-appropriate clothes as that, but I did ride my bike from Erie to work on Bike To Work Day 2009, which is 14 miles each way.

(If there are any Boulderites reading this and snickering, you can stop now. That is a major ride for me in traffic.)

It does feel really great to whiz down the hill on CO7 from Erie into Lafayette. I did a really good job at the intersection of 7 & 287 this time (no wobbling as I tried to unclip). And the Boulder Creek trail is pretty in the morning. After work, I started my ride home in some light sprinkles, hoping to make it home before the major rain we had been experiencing each evening unleashed. By the lake on Baseline, I was starting to get concerned that my sunglasses didn’t have windshield wipers. Coming thru Lafayette, I sincerely hoped my road bike tires would provide enough grip to keep me upright for the rest of the way home, which culminated in a ride back up the big hill in a torrential downpour. I crossed over 7 and into my neighborhood just as the clouds began to part. All in all, it was definitely my most memorable transportation day in 2009.
